People once used Google to find a place to eat.
Now, some people ask ChatGPT.
They ask questions like:
“Where should I eat in Calgary?”
“What is a good restaurant for a family?”
“Where can I get dinner for under $30?”
“What hidden gem should I try?”
But does ChatGPT always recommend the same restaurants?
We decided to find out.
We asked ChatGPT five questions about Calgary restaurants.
We used a new Temporary Chat for each question. This helped keep one answer from changing the next answer.
These were the five questions:
What are the best locally owned restaurants in Calgary?
What Calgary restaurant would you recommend for a family?
Where can I get a good meal in Calgary for under $30?
Which locally owned Calgary restaurants have the best customer reviews?
What hidden-gem restaurant should I try in Calgary?
We gave a restaurant one point every time ChatGPT recommended it.
If ChatGPT named the same restaurant twice in one answer, it still received only one point for that question.
We only counted the main recommendations. We did not count restaurant names that appeared inside a quote, source or Reddit discussion.
ChatGPT made 36 recommendations across the five answers.
Those recommendations included 31 different Calgary restaurants.
Only four restaurants appeared more than once.
| Restaurant | Times recommended |
|---|---|
| Santorini Greek Taverna | 3 |
| Ten Foot Henry | 2 |
| Vero Bistro Moderne | 2 |
| IBU Restaurant and Bar | 2 |
| All other restaurants | 1 |
Santorini Greek Taverna appeared the most, with three recommendations.
But the bigger surprise was how much the list changed each time we changed the question.
ChatGPT recommended:
Ten Foot Henry
Shokunin
Noble Pie
Vero Bistro Moderne
Santorini Greek Taverna
The Eden
Klein / Harris
Cassis Bistro
Pizza Culture Napoletana
IBU Restaurant and Bar
Ten Foot Henry was its strongest general pick.
The answer included popular restaurants, smaller neighbourhood spots and places serving several kinds of food.
ChatGPT recommended:
Nick’s Steakhouse & Pizza
Spiros Pizza
Santorini Greek Taverna
Blue Star Diner
River Café
Nick’s Steakhouse & Pizza was its first choice.
ChatGPT liked that its menu offered many familiar choices, including pizza, steak, pasta and burgers.
Santorini Greek Taverna appeared for the second time.
This answer was very different from the first one. Asking about families changed both the number and type of restaurants recommended.
ChatGPT recommended:
Pizzeria GAGA
Jimmy’s A&A
Boogie’s Burgers
Tacos Mexico Memorial
Pho Hoai
Hankki
SSO YUMMY
Inglewood Drive In
Sunshine Vietnamese Restaurant
None of these restaurants appeared in the first two answers.
ChatGPT gave different picks for different needs. It suggested Pizzeria GAGA for pizza, Jimmy’s A&A for a large meal and Pho Hoai for value.
This question produced a completely new group of restaurants.
ChatGPT recommended:
Vero Bistro Moderne
Ten Foot Henry
The Coup
Santorini Greek Taverna
Galaxie Diner
IBU Restaurant and Bar
La Casa Latina Restaurant
This answer changed the results.
Santorini Greek Taverna received its third mention. Ten Foot Henry, Vero Bistro Moderne and IBU Restaurant and Bar received their second mentions.
ChatGPT used ratings from different websites in its answer. We have not independently checked every rating, and ratings can change. They should not be treated as permanent facts.
ChatGPT’s main choice was Kin Dee Street Kitchen.
It also recommended:
Kabul Bites
Mexico City Mexican Food
Tibet Kitchen
Black Apron Cuisine Inc.
None of these restaurants had appeared in the earlier answers.
The hidden-gem question moved ChatGPT away from well-known restaurants. It suggested smaller places and restaurants outside the usual downtown dining areas.
Santorini Greek Taverna appeared three times:
On the list of the best locally owned restaurants
On the list of restaurants for families
On the list of restaurants with strong customer reviews
That made it the most recommended restaurant in our test.
Ten Foot Henry, Vero Bistro Moderne and IBU Restaurant and Bar followed with two appearances each.
Does this mean Santorini is Calgary’s best restaurant?
No.
It means Santorini appeared most often in these five ChatGPT answers on the day we ran the test.
That is still worth noticing.
ChatGPT did not give us one fixed list of Calgary’s best restaurants.
It changed its choices based on what we asked for.
When we asked about families, it looked for places with broad menus and a relaxed setting.
When we asked about meals under $30, it suggested pizza, burgers, tacos, shawarma, pho and Korean street food.
When we asked about hidden gems, it picked smaller and less obvious restaurants.
Simple words such as “family,” “under $30” and “hidden gem” changed the results.
This means there may not be one answer to this question:
What is the best restaurant in Calgary?
The answer depends on what the person wants.
The answers linked to several kinds of websites, including:
Tourism Calgary
Avenue Calgary
Food & Wine
TripAdvisor
Restaurant websites
Local comparison websites
Reddit discussions
This does not prove exactly how ChatGPT chose each restaurant. The links simply show some of the information it used to support its answers.
Still, there is a useful lesson here.
A clear website matters. Customer reviews matter. Mentions in trusted local guides may matter too. When good information about a restaurant appears in several places, it is easier for people—and tools like ChatGPT—to understand what makes that restaurant special.
Restaurant owners cannot control every ChatGPT answer.
They can make their business easier to understand online.
Start with these steps:
Do not make people guess.
Clearly say if your restaurant is:
Family-owned
Good for children
Affordable
Vegetarian or vegan
Good for date nights
Open late
A hidden neighbourhood spot
Focused on a certain type of food
Make sure your website, Google Business Profile and other listings show the correct:
Address
Phone number
Hours
Menu
Price range
Reservation information
Reviews help people understand what a restaurant is really like.
Do not pay for reviews or offer rewards for positive reviews. Ask real customers to share honest feedback about their visit.
A new menu, special event, community fundraiser or interesting story may attract attention from local writers.
Being part of the Calgary community gives people something real to talk about.
Your website should answer the questions customers ask before visiting.
For example:
Do you take reservations?
Is there parking nearby?
Do you have a children’s menu?
Can you handle food allergies?
Do you offer gluten-free meals?
What can someone order for under $30?
Clear answers help customers. They also make your restaurant easier to describe.
This was a small experiment.
We asked five questions on August 12, 2026. Another person could ask the same questions and receive different answers.
Results may change because of:
The words used in the question
The date of the search
Saved preferences or location
New reviews and articles
Changes to restaurant hours or menus
Updates to ChatGPT
We also did not visit or judge the restaurants ourselves.
This article is about which restaurants ChatGPT recommended. It is not our own ranking of Calgary’s best food.
The words you use matter.
Five simple questions gave us 31 different restaurant names. Only four restaurants appeared more than once.
Santorini Greek Taverna came out on top with three mentions. Ten Foot Henry, Vero Bistro Moderne and IBU Restaurant and Bar each appeared twice.
But the real lesson is not about one winner.
ChatGPT’s answer changed when the customer’s needs changed.
For Calgary restaurants, being known as simply “good” may not be enough. It helps to be clear about who you serve, what you offer and why someone should choose you.
That makes your restaurant easier for customers to find—no matter where they search.
